Anky Wins Gold, Werth Silver, Kemmer Bronze; Steffen Peters and Ravel Finish Fourth
Steffen Peters and Akiko Yamazaki's Ravel danced their way through the Freestyle with music from Men Without Hats and the Rolling Stones. Their 76.500% in the Freestyle wasn't enough to edge out Heike Kemmer of Germany for the bronze medal. With Steffen's final score of 74.150%, only .3% separated the two. Having performed his first Grand Prix just this year, if these Olympic Games are any indication, Ravel has a bright future ahead of him.

Acampo, CA - Carole Ann Ford will soon be receiving a year's supply of Vetrolin brand grooming products from Vetrolin manufacturer Farnam. Judges at this year's American Shetland Pony Congress, held in early August in Cloverdale, Indiana, were asked to choose the Shetland Pony that outshined all the rest. The decision of the three judges was unanimous and Ford's Wauk-A-Way Daphne was declared the winner of the 2008 Vetrolin Grooming Award.

Georgia Department of Agriculture Bans sale of Cogongrass; Fire Hazard
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has issued a statewide ban on the sale of Cogongrass, a non-native and aggressively invasive species of grass. Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) is already listed as a noxious weed by the United States Department of Agriculture and is therefore illegal to transport across state lines.

Bronson Announces Detection of Horse Disease, Equine Piroplasmosis
TALLAHASSEE -- Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson today announced that a Manatee County horse has been diagnosed with Equine Piroplasmosis (EP), an animal disease that the United States has been considered free of since 1988. Blood and tissue testing of a 7-year-old gelding that had been euthanized after a three-week illness confirmed the presence of the disease in the animal.

A Personal Account & Anguish from the 2008 EEE Outbreak in North Florida
June 24, 2008 - Eastern Equine Encephalitis is on the rampage in our area. Please advise people to get their horses vaccinated! I have the test results from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Animal Industry-Bureau of Diagnostic Laboratories - attached is one of two lab results on the horses that we had come down with EEE. The third horse we did not have tested. We know it was the same thing. Vet bills run up too quickly!

Bronson Urges Vaccinations for Horses as EEE Cases Rise
July 2, 2008 - TALLAHASSEE - Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles Bronson is urging horse owners to get their animals vaccinated as the number of Eastern Equine Encephalitis cases are on the rise. As of June 30, there are four times as many cases as there were during the same time period in the two previous years. There have been 45 confirmed cases covering 21 counties as far south as Palm Beach County.

Higher hay prices in 2008. Choose the best forage option for your horses
The USDA has released several crop reports that indicate the number of hay acres will be down in 2008; also reported that the existing hay supply is lower than previous years. This information, combined with higher input costs (fuel, fertilizer, land rent), will likely lead to increased hay prices. Remember that horses need roughage just like everyone else-in fact, they need much more. Fifty to 100 percent of a horse's diet should be forage of some sort.
